Schreiner Outlasts Hendrix in SCAC Quarterfinal Thriller

KERRVILLE, Texas – Fourth seed and host Schreiner University outlasted fifth-seeded Hendrix College, 4-3, in a quarterfinal thriller Friday afternoon at the Cree Tennis Center, to advance into the SCAC Women’s Tennis Semifinals. Official Website | Postmatch InterviewPhoto Album

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead following doubles as Caroline Lasley and Josie Leffingwell (6-4) and Kate Adcox and Abby Youngberg (7-6(7-5)) picked up wins at the No.1 and No. 3 doubles lines respectively. Adcox and Youngberg secured the doubles point for Hendrix after Mikinley Jamison and Kinverly Ibarra of Schreiner evened the doubles match 1-1 with a 6-2 win at line No. 2. 

In singles action, Schreiner’s Maya Jackson evened the score at 1-1 after picking up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. The Warriors then took a 3-1 lead after Lasley and Youngberg both secured their second points of the afternoon. Lasley picked up a win a the top singles line, 6-3, 6-2, while Youngberg won at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-4.

Facing elimination, the Mountaineers needed to rally and win the final three singles matches on court to pull off the victory. Katherine Bergeron pulled the first point back, winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 4 singles to bring Schreiner to within one, 3-2. Jamison evened the score at 3-3 setting up a showdown in the final singles match with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.

Down to the final singles match, with a spot in the SCAC semifinals on the line, Schreiner’s Ibarra vaulted the Mountaineers into the semifinals and completing the comeback with a 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.

Schreiner improves to 9-10 and advances into the SCAC Semifinals. This marks the third time in the last four years Schreiner has advanced into the SCAC semifinals. The Mountaineers will face SCAC regular season champion and top seeded Colorado College, scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday morning. CC defeated Scheriner, 7-0, back on March 13th in Kerrville during the regular season. Hendrix ends its first season back in the SCAC since 2012 with a 7-9 overall record.
