Austin College Advances to SCAC Semifinals in PK Thriller

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sophomore midfielder Jay Facundo notched his second goal of the season in the 21st minute to give Austin College the early lead. Sophomore midfielder Marco Guzman assisted on the goal - chalking up his fourth helper of the season.
  • Hendrix's Conner Smith pumped in the equalizer in the 73rd minute - his second of the season - to pump new life into the Warriors.
  • From there, the two teams battled through the remainder of regulatlon and two overtime periods before deciding the advancing team in PKs. 
  • Luis Garza-Rios, Pierce Wear and Sam Spencer nailed each of their PK attempts while for Austin College while only Joseph Avila was successful out of the four attempts taken by Hendrix.
  • Hendrix held a slight 20-17 shots advantage, with each team taking four shots in the overtime periods. The Warriors took seven corners to the four taken by the 'Roos.

NOTABLES

  • Thursday night's PK affair was the first men's tournament quarterfinal to be decided in PKs since St. Thomas advanced over Texas Lutheran by the same 3-1 advantage - even though that game was scoreless through regulation and overtime.
  • The last time Austin College won a SCAC men's soccer tournament in PKs (2017), head coach Taylor Goyen was a junior on that squad.
  • Hendrix College ends its season with an 8-8-2 mark.

Austin College (8-6-3) will face top-seeded Colorado College in tomorrow's first men's semifinal which is scheduled to kickoff at 5:00 pm CT.
