PEDRO ECHEVERRIA OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a senior forward on the men's soccer team from Irving, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning November 3.
The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.
Echeverria has been actively involved across the Austin College campus since arriving in Sherman, with the senior men’s soccer player a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in addition to being the president of the Catholic Students Association, as well as working with Austin College’s Institutional Marketing and Communications Group.
Through his work with Institutional Marketing and Communications, Echeverria has worked closely with members throughout the Austin College and Sherman community to host the yearly TEDxAustinCollege events, bringing speakers to campus throughout the year, in addition to his work helping to plan the activities with Austin College’s prestigious Posey Leadership Award.
This year, as a member of Austin College’s SAAC, Echeverria has helped organize the group’s first-ever Student-Athlete Bible Study Group, aiming to connect student-athletes, improve their mental health, and foster an atmosphere of fellowship, belonging, and spirituality. Echeverria has similarly led weekly bible studies and meetings in his role as the president of Austin College’s Catholic Students Association, in addition to volunteering at the local St. Mary’s Parish in Sherman.
Echeverria is a regular participant in Austin College’s Great Day of Service, where members of the community come together to help build houses, clean yards, or take care of small projects for local non-profits, and along with his teammates in the men’s soccer program, has partnered with Austin College’s Service Station to lead the group’s Service Saturdays throughout the year. For his tremendous efforts in giving back to his community, this past April, Echeverria was honored with the Sarah and Robert Hallam Citizenship Scholarship for commitment to community service in addition to outstanding academic performance.
