MEGAN SIMONSON OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a senior on the women's swimming and diving team from Naperville, Ill., has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning November 10.
The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.
Megan helps run the Little Katz swim program at CC. The team invites kids to the Schlessman Natatorium to teach them to swim while mentoring them in and out of the water. The CC swimmers also teach the kids water safety and introduce them to competitive swimming.
Former CC swimmer Matt Nadel ('14) started the program 12 years ago, and it has been growing ever since.
“It’s been really beneficial for them to learn water safety and swimming skills,” Simonson said. “It’s such a great thing for them to have access to our facilities and resources, and it’s been really rewarding to the team as well.”
The swim team has also partnered with USA Triathlon as a part of teaching kids the sport, the athletes were able to use CC facilities, including Schlessman Natatorium.
Megan is also a member of the CC Student-Athletes Advisory Committee (SAAC), a student-led group on campus that advocates for student-athletes, improves their experience, and builds community through service projects and community events.
SAAC also partners with Colorado Springs organizations, such as TESSA of Colorado Springs. This non-profit organization provides confidential support and services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.
