AMYIA BOWIE OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a senior guard from Red Oak, Texas, has been named the SCAC Women’s Basketball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, February 15 through Sunday, February 22. SCAC Women's Basketball Release (Week 15)
Bowie was outstanding leading the Celts’ defensive effort last week in helping St. Thomas close out the year with three wins. Bowie averaged 7.0 rebounds, 4.7 on the defensive glass and added 3.0 steals and 0.7 blocks per game to lift UST to wins over McMurry, LeTourneau and Centenary. Bowie and the Celts defense held all three opponents to under their season scoring average in league play and limited all three to just 35.6 percent shooting across the weekend.
Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Junior forward Riley Brady of Hendrix posted back-to-back double-doubles in Hendrix's weekend split versus Austin College and Dallas, averaging 15 points, 14.5 rebounds, and 10 defensive rebounds. On Sunday, she scored her 1,000th career point and also set the new single-season SCAC rebound record. She recorded four steals in the 74-47 win over Dallas. Senior forward Aryana Cleveland of McMurry averaged 4.3 defensive rebounds and 1.7 steals per game last week in leading the War Hawks to a 1-2 record and securing a spot in the SCAC Tournament. Sophomore forward Kennedi Wight of Ozarks provided an outstanding defensive effort to push the Eagles to a 2-0 record and increase the program's win streak to seven games. She was a big reason the Eagles defense limited its two opponents to 49.0 points per game, averaging 4.5 defensive rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. Sophomore center Lynnashia Brooks of Schreiner averaged five defensive rebounds and one steal per game in lifting the Mountaineers to a 1-1 record to close out the regular season. Junior guard Callista Perez of Texas Lutheran was the defensive spark in the Bulldogs’ 2-0 record last week, securing the No. 2 seed in the Gold Division. Perez averaged 1.5 steals and 1.5 defensive rebounds per game and led the defensive effort as the Bulldogs limited opponents to just 59 points per game in two wins.
