BELL MARTINEZ OF SCHREINER UNIVERSITY, a senior guard from San Antonio, Texas, has been named the SCAC Women’s Basketball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, January 5 through Sunday, January 11. SCAC Women's Basketball Release (Week 9)
Martinez was outstanding defensively leading the Mountaineers to a pair of SCAC wins at home over the weekend. She opened the week with five steals in a win over LeTourneau and then posted an SCAC season best with seven steals in a single game in the win over Centenary. Martinez, averaged five steals per game and 3.5 defensive rebounds per game.
Senior guard Kayla Mackel of Colorado College was outstanding defensively in leading the Tigers to a pair of SCAC wins and improve to 4-0 in league play. Mackel averaged 2.5 steals, 1.5 blocks and grabbed 3.5 defensive rebounds per game. He efforts limited both Austin College and Dallas to less than 50 points and on the season the Tigers are second in the SCAC allowing opponents just 57.5 points per game. Senior post Samantha Ising of Concordia (Tex.) was a consistent force on the defensive side of the floor, averaging 1.7 blocks and 1.3 defensive rebounds per game. On the season, Ising leads the SCAC with 26 blocks on the year, an averaged of 2.0 blocks per game. Junior forward Riley Brady of Hendrix averaged 7.0 defensive rebounds and 1.0 steals per game in the Warriors 1-1 week in league play. Brady extended her double-double streak to nine after back-to-back double-doubles over the weekend. Senior forward Aryana Cleveland of McMurry lifted the War Hawks to a perfect 4-0 record in SCAC play this year with wins over Centenary and LeTourneau last weekend. Cleveland averaged 6.5 defensive rebounds and 3.0 steals per contest. Cleveland and the McMurry defense limited the Ladies to just 34 points and held the YellowJackets to under 50 points. Senior guard Amyia Bowie of St. Thomas lifted the Celts to a 3-0 record last week, including a pair of SCAC wins over Dallas and Austin College. She recorded a pair of steals in all three games and added 3.7 defensive rebounds per game. Bowie is currently second in the SCAC with 32 steals on the season. Senior guard Lauren Sansano of Texas Lutheran averaged 3.7 steals and 6.7 defensive rebounds in leading the Bulldogs to a perfect 3-0 week in SCAC action with wins over Concordia, Ozarks and Hendrix all at home.
