PENFIELD, N.Y. – The opening round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf National Championships got underway Monday and for the second time in the last three years, the SCAC is being represented by a pair of teams in Trinity University and University of St. Thomas. Live Results
The 72-hole championships are being held at Midvale Country Club in Penfield, New York, hosted by St. John Fisher and Rochester NY Sports Commission. In addition to Midvale, first and second round competition will be played simultaneously at Cobblestone Creek Country Club in Victor, New York.
Trinity opened competition at the main site, Midvale Country Club and fired a team first round of 297 (+9) to sit in a tie for fifth after the first 18 holes. The Tigers are just seven shots off the leaders, Illinois Wesleyan, which shot an opening round 290 (+2) and are just three shots back of being in a tie for second-place.
Trinity was outstanding on the par-4’s with a 4.16 scoring average (+8) good enough for second best in the field on the opening day. The Tigers also posted 14 birdies as a team (T5th in the field) and finished with two eagles to pace the field going into day two.
Individually, Trinity was led by graduate student Jacob Mason who sits tied for 17th following an opening round 73 (+1). Mason, who carded three birdies on that afternoon, finished his round with a stretch of eight consecutive pars and sits just five shots off the individual lead going into round two. Tiger junior Carter Code, who posted one of two Tiger eagles yesterday, finished inside the top-35 and sits tied for 31st after posting a two-over round of 74. Code took advantage of the longer par-5 holes, currently tied for seventh in the entire field on the par-5 holes with a cumulative score of -3.
St. Thomas, which is making its second NCAA appearance in the last three years, opened up first round action at the secondary site, Cobblestone Country Club and sits tied for 33rd after the team posted an overall score of 314 (+26). The Celts head into the second round just five shots from being inside the top-25.
The Celts ended the opening round with eight birdies, tied for 31st in the field and posted 46 pars, tied for 20th overall after the first 18 holes.
Individually, SCAC medalist, sophomore Antonio Ramirez paced the Celts sitting in a tie for 53rd place after an opening round of 75 (+3). Ramirez finished his opening round with three birdies and six bogies.
The Midvale course played slightly easier on the opening day as the par-72, 6,558-yard layout produced an opening round scoring average of 77.72, while the 6,770-yard par-72 Cobblestone Country Club produced an opening round scoring average of 78.09.
Day two of the tournament is also scheduled for a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. with impending inclement weather in the area. The top 18 teams after tomorrow's results will make the cut and continue to rounds three and four. The top six individuals not on those 18 teams will also advance to play for the individual title.
