GARRETT RODGERS OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a junior forward from Decatur, Texas, has been named the SCAC Men’s Basketball Offensive Player of the Week for games played from Friday, November 7 through Sunday, November 9. SCAC Men's Basketball Release (Week 1)
Rodgers came off the bench and made an immediate impact, scoring 15 points in just 16 minutes while shooting a blistering 85.7 percent (6-for-7) from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from the line. He also added two rebounds and one assist. His efficient play helped the Celts open the season with a 1-0 record and set the tone for a strong offensive start.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior guard Craig Collier of Centenary had a big opening weekend for the Gents as he averaged 19.5 points per game in a pair of non-conference games against Berry and Pfeiffer in the Viking Tip-Off Classic. Collier came off in the bench in both games, averaging 25.2 minutes per game, and finished 48.3 percent from the floor and 87.5 percent from the line. He also added three steals and two assists during the weekend. Junior guard Ty Hendler of Colorado College led the Tigers to a historic comeback win over DII foe Western Colorado in the season opener. Hendler scored the game-winning bucket at the buzzer in overtime to lead CC to the 94-92 victory. The Tigers trailed by as many as 23 points in the second half. Hendler finished the game with 22 points, seven rebounds, one assist, and a steal. He shot 41 percent from the floor and went 8-8 at the free-throw line. Junior JaRayl People of McMurry lifted the War Hawks to a three-point win over ETBU to open the season, scoring 19 points on 5-of-10 from the field. People added eight rebounds and two steals in the win. Junior forward Teddy Tapken of Texas Lutheran averaged 21.5 points over two games last weekend on an impressive 57.7 percent shooting. Tapken, dating back to last season, has now registered 20-plus points in four consecutive contests. He also added 9.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game over the opening weekend for the Bulldogs.
