LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Only two conference men's tennis teams were on the court in what was a light week of action in the SCAC.
Southwestern opened its spring season with a pair of wins over McMurry University and Hardin-Simmons in Abilene, Texas. Against McMurry, the Pirates swept singles competition in straight sets with Alexis Dimanche pulling out a tough win over Carlos Martinez, taking the first step in a tiebreaker (7-6) and taking the second 7-5.
Southwestern took two of three in doubles, with Alonso Fernandez and Dimanche defeating Connor Hogan and Zach Miller and Alexander Joseph and Jeremy Wilson defeating Joseph Diaz and Chris Causer.
In their second match of the day, the Pirates defeated Hardin-Simmons, 7-2. After falling behing 2-1 following doubles, Southwestern rebounded to take five of the six matches in straight sets.
Schreiner traveled to Belton, Texas and Austin, Texas for non-conference matches against Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia on Saturday. The Mountaineers defeated the Crusaders, 6-3, before falling to the Tornados, 8-1.
Schreiner picked up doubles wins at No. 1 with Luis Cabreja and Andrew Albright and No. 3 with Joshua Newman and Juan Ortiz to take an early 2-1 lead against UMHB. Cabreja (No. 1 singles) and Austin Cervantes (No. 6 singles) both earned come-from-behind singles victories after dropping opening sets, and Newman (No. 2), Albright (No. 3) and Mario Galliner (No. 6) won their lines in straight sets.
Casey Voss and Cervantes picked up the Mountaineers only point of the match against Concordia, taking the 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
