LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Three SCAC men's swimming and diving teams were in the pool last weekend, highlighted by an intra-conference dual between Austin College and Southwestern.
Southwestern opened its season at home with a dominant 203-74 victory over Austin College on Saturday.
The Pirates nearly swept all the top finishes, placing first in every event except the 200 Yard IM, missing the mark by fractions of a second and taking three of the top four spots in the event.
Freshman Keith Gill helped pace the Pirates by playing a hand in 40 points, winning both of his individual events and serving as the anchor leg in the men's winning 200 Yard Medley Relay team, which finished with a time of 1:38.87; and the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team, which finished with a 1:28.23 time.
For Austin College, the 'Roos got a first place finish from Chris Brown in the 200 individual medley, as Brown touched in a time of 2:04.36 in the event, and Colton Baker won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.
Trinity competed against University of Incarnate Word as the swimming events were held at UIW's Ann Barshop Natatorium, while Trinity hosted diving in Hixon Natatorium.
Among the swimming higlights for the Tigers, Shamzi Alkaff finished second in the men's 50-yard freestyle by .20 seconds. Daniel Sarman came in at #2 in the 200-yard backstroke, as did Jacob Hurrell-Zitelman in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
In men's diving at Hixon Natatorium, Daniel Valmassei posted NCAA Division III Regional qualifying scores in 1-meter and 3-meter events, finishing second behind the Incarnate Word diver. Valmassei scored 348.15 on the high board and 326.40 on the low board.
The 2018 swimming and diving schedule continues next week with Austin College, Centenary, McMurry and the University of the Ozarks all set to compete at the Hendrix College Relays and Classic.
