INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The NCAA released the selections for the 2019 Division III Swimming and Diving Championships and five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference student-athletes made the cut.
Trinity University will be represented by three divers and two swimmers at the 2019 Championships. Tiger sophomores Beau Tipton and Mabel Fowler will each be making their swimming debut at this year’s national meet.
Tipton earned a nod to the men’s 200-yard butterfly, with a time of 1:49.01. His NCAA mark is ranked 12th in the field and was set in the preliminaries of the SCAC conference championships in February. Tipton went on to win the 200-yard fly for the second consecutive year.
Fowler received bids to the women’s 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard freestyle events. Her time of 2:01.25 in the 200 backstroke is seeded eight and the mark of 1:51.49 in the 200 freestyle is ranked 19th. Each mark was hit last November at the Trinity Invitational.
On the diving side, the Tigers will send two men, sophomores Daniel Valmassei and Anthony Liva, and one woman, freshman Maren Merwarth, to represent TU and the SCAC. Valmassei and Liva both competed in the 2018 NCAA Championships with the former earning Honorable Mention All-America honors on the 1-meter board. Merwarth will compete in her first national meet after winning SCAC Diver of the Meet and finishing third and fourth at diving regionals on the 1 and 3-meter boards respectively.
The 2019 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships will take place March 20-23 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference and the Greensboro Aquatic Center will serve as co-hosts. A total of 579 participants (526 swimmers and 53 divers) will compete in the championships.
