SOPHIA SMITH OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a first-year from Plano, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week for performances during the meets swam Friday, October 24 & Saturday, October 25. SCAC Swimming & Diving Release (Week 3)
Smith posted the second fastest time in the SCAC this year in the 200 IM at the Hendrix Classic over the weekend, hitting the wall in 2:23.15 to capture gold. She also had an event win in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:24.44, the third fastest time in the conference to date.
Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore Ruthie Ward of Asbury helped secure three victories en route to a women's team win over Transylvania in dual meet to open the 2025-26 season. Individually, Ward won the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.81. Additionally, she swan legs on a pair of winning Eagle relays, posting a 26.02 split in the fly on the 200-medley and then anchored the 200-freestyle with a closing leg of 24.78, edging out Transy’s anchor by almost a full second. First-year Annie Engstrom of Colorado College was the Tigers' top individual point scorer in a dual meet against Div. II Colorado School on Mines. Engstrom posted two new season best times and Top 10 swims in program history in the 500 Free and 1,000 Free. She earned a win in the 500 Free with a 5:08.37 which is seventh all-time in program history and she was second in the 1,000 Free with 10:36.30, second best time in program history. Senior CeCe Werth of Hendrix shined at the Hendrix Relays and Hendrix Classic over the weekend, winning the 200- (2:03.99) and 500-yard freestyle (5:36.06) and placing second in the 100-yard freestyle (58.28). Her 500 time currently ranks fourth in the SCAC, while her time in the 200 stands as the sixth fastest in the league. Sophomore Valentina Garcia of St. Thomas (Tex.) had an outstanding weekend for the Celts, posting a lifetime best in the 500-yard freestyle, hitting the wall in 6:03.91 against a field comprised of athletes across all divisions. She also swam key legs in a pair of Celts’ relays, splitting a 1:14.12 as the fly leg in the 400 medley and anchoring the 200-medley with a freestyle split of 24.47.
