LAUREN SANSANO OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a senior guard from San Antonio, Texas, has been named the SCAC Women’s Basketball Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, January 5 through Sunday, January 11. SCAC Women's Basketball Release (Week 9)
Sansano recorded the first triple-double of her career against Ozarks (AR) as just one part of a dominant showing through three conference games last week. She finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, and six steals in the Bulldogs' win over the Eagles. The 11 rebounds matched her career-high while the 10 assists and six steals are new career-highs for the senior. The triple-double is the first since Tara Molina on January 26, 2019 vs. Trinity. It is the third triple-double since the Bulldogs joined the SCAC and since the program becoming an NCAA institution (2000-01). Against Concordia (TX), Sansano moved into second all-time in program history in career assists with over 250 in her career. It is the first 20+ point triple double in program history. In total on the week, Sansano averaged 18.3 points on 58.3 percent shooting, 8.0 assists, 7.0 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game to lift TLU to a perfect 3-0 week.
First-year forward Rayna Welsch of Colorado College led the Tigers to a 2-0 weekend with key SCAC wins over Austin College and Dallas at home. She averaged 15.5 points on 61.1 percent shooting and grabbed 6.5 boards per game. Additionally, Welsch dished out 1.5 assists and accounted for 0.5 blacks and 0.5 steals per contest as well. Junior forward Shanna Brown of Concordia (Tex.) was outstanding last week, leading the Tornados to a 1-2 mark in league action, highlighted by a win over Ozarks to close out the weekend. Brown averaged 26 points, including a season-high 30 to go along with 10 rebounds in a tough loss against TLU. Brown connected on 53.7 percent from the field and grabbed an impressive 12.0 rebounds per game. She posted three double-doubles on the week and had a season-high five steals against Hendrix. Sophomore guard Isabelle Chevalier of Dallas was incredibly efficient all week for the Crusaders, averaging an impressive 20.5 points per game on 56.7 percent shooting. She also added 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 0.5 assists per contest. Senior guard Helana Chadwick of McMurry continues to dazzle in her senior season, pushing the War Hawks to a 4-0 record in SCAC play after averaging 25.0 points per game, highlighted by 29 in a win over LeTourneau on Sunday. Chadwick connected on 58.8 percent shooting and added 7.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game. Currently, Chadwick is pacing the SCAC in both points and assists per game. Junior guard Abby Beene of Ozarks averaged 14.5 points per game over two road contests while hitting 5-of-8 (62%) from the three-point line. Beene also pulled down 4.5 rebounds per game and shot 50 percent from the field. Beene's week was highlighted by her 20-point performance against Concordia. Senior guard Brie Sosa of Schreiner lifted the Mountaineers to a pair of SCAC wins last week at home, knocking off LeTourneau on Friday and defeating Centenary on Sunday. Sosa averaged 16.5 points per game on 36.7 percent shooting and added 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game in the two wins. Junior guard Macie Whitfield of St. Thomas continued her outstanding season, leading the Celts to three big wins last week including a pair in SCAC action. Whitfield averaged 14.7 points on an impressive 54.8 percent shooting and added 7.7 rebounds per game, highlighted by a 13-point, 10 rebound double-double performance in the Celts’ win over Dallas on Friday.
