HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore Will Shuflit of Colorado College (watch post race interview) opened Saturday's action by taking top honors in the 10,000 meters with a finishing time of 31:35.09, destroying the previous conference record by over 30 seconds. The former record (Brian McCarthy, Rhodes - 32:08.73) was set at the 2003 championships and was the fourth-oldest mark on the conference books. Finishing in second was first-year Alexander Bozhilov of Dallas, whose time of 31:51.93 was also better than the previous conference record, and third was junior Axel Klomparens of Colorado College at 32:56.62.
- Diego Flores of Trinity (watch post race interview) made history on Saturday, becoming just the second male and first since Simon Flory of DePauw (2001-2004) to win four consecutive 3,000-meter steeplechase titles at the conference championship meet. The senior earned the 2025 title with a 9:33.88 finish (sixth fastest in conference meet history), holding off first-year Vincent Mangat of Colorado College who, despite falling at the water barrier on the penultimate lap, took second place with a 9:34.69 finish. Junior Logan Nasky of Trinity (9:37.33) took third place honors.
- Following the morning's opening two track events, action returned to the field events where McMurry's DonTre Sinegal (watch post race interview) garnered top honors in the triple jump with a leap of 15.00 meters (49' 2 1/2"). Sinegal, who entered the meet with the longest effort in Division III this season (15.76 meters), didn't reach that distance but did post the second-best effort in SCAC championship meet history, finishing just behind the 49' 3 1/2" that Centre's Chrys Jones achieved the same season he won the individual national championship in the event. For Sinegal, it was his third consecutive conference title in the event after having earned gold in the event the last two seasons at the ASC championship meet. Finishing second was junior Bocar Diagana of Trinity, who lept 14.27 meters (46' 9 3/4"), and third was first-year Amir McClain of Texas Lutheran who reached 13.94 meters (45' 8 3/4") on his best effort.
- Southwestern sophomore Lukas Nowlin (watch post race interview) cleared 2.02 meters (6' 7 1/2") to take gold in the high jump, which ties for the seventh-best performance in SCAC championship meet history. Taking silver in the event for the second consecutive year was sophomore Parker Cabra of Texas Lutheran, who also cleared 2.02 meters but with more misses (6' 7 1/2") than Nowlin. Senior Matthew Hicks of St. Thomas, who won the event last year, was third with a clearance of 1.97 meters (6' 5 1/2").
- McMurry senior Reagan Owen (watch post race interview) capped the day's field events with a massive performance in the hammer throw, shattering the former conference record of 174' 6" set by former TLU student-athlete Zachary Herman at the 2022 championships. Owen, who was the ASC champion in this event last season, reached 56.17 meters (184' 3") with his toss to establish the new SCAC championship mark by almost 10 feet. Finishing second was sophomore Calvin Mason of LeTourneau with an effort of 48.71 meters (159' 10") and McMurry sophomore Daniel Mora was third with a toss of 47.42 meters (155' 7").
- The remaining track events during the afternoon session were all preliminaries (results found here), setting up an action packed day of finals in the 110-hurdles, 400 meters, 100 meters, 800 meters, 400 meter hurdles and 200 meters - in addition to the 5,000 meters, 1,500 meters and the two team relays (4x1 and 4x4).
- Among the highlights from Saturday's preliminaries, the SCAC meet record was equaled in the 100 meters, as senior Jacorian Colbert of McMurry tied the conference mark with his 10.56 finish. The current mark was set by Texas Lutheran's Darren Jones at the 2019 championships.
