Southwestern's Roy Headlines 2025 All-SCAC Men's Tennis Selections

SUWANEE, Ga. - In exclusive voting by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors, Oscar Roy of Southwestern University has been selected the 2025 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Men’s Tennis Player-of-the-Year. It is the second consecutive year he has earned the honor. Complete Release

In that same balloting, Rocco Mendez of Trinity University earned Newcomer-of-the-Year honors and Tigers’ coach, Russell McMindes, was tabbed as Men’s Coach-of-the-Year.

Roy, a senior from Toronto, Ontario, amassed a 12-3 dual-match record at the No. 1 line for the Pirates this season (13-7 overall) and was a perfect 4-0 in conference play. He reached the quarterfinal round in singles and was the runner-up in doubles at the 2024 Fall ITA. He partnered with junior Ashton Ellis for much of the 2024-25 campaign and the duo posted a 9-5 dual-match mark (3-1 in conference play) – leading Roy to receive all-SCAC recognition as both a singles and doubles player this season. At the 2025 SCAC Men’s Tennis Championship, Roy went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and earned all-tournament honors for the third time in his career, having also been recognized in 2022 and 2023. He and Ellis went 3-0 at No. 1 doubles at the championships as Roy earned his second career doubles play all-tournament accolade (2022).

Roy’s selection marks the seventh time a student-athlete has earned two career SCAC Player-of-the-Year honors and the sixth to win the award in consecutive years. He is the third different Southwestern player to earn the honor, following following Alexis Dimanche in 2018 and Hunter Bajoit in 2021, who shared the honor that year with Cameron Krimbill of Trinity – another two-time honoree.

Mendez, a first-year from Las Vegas, Nev., is a doubles all-American with his ITA Southwest Regional Championship win from the fall. He has played line 1 doubles all season and has recently been moved up to line 2 singles. Mendez, who sports a 9-6 record in singles play and a 13-8 mark in doubles play (with partner Kishan Kersten), is currently ranked third in the West Region in doubles and 10th nationally. The Mendez/Kersten duo were three-time SCAC Doubles Team-of-the-Week during the regular season, including in Week 4 when the pairing went 2-1 at line one during the ITA Indoor National Championships where the Tigers finished seventh at the tournament. They won at line one doubles against #2 Claremont and #16 Gustavus over the weekend, helping Trinity to the doubles win in two of the three matches.

Mendez represents Trinity’s second consecutive Newcomer of the Year award-winner – following teammate Jared Perry’s selection a year ago – and the seventh overall honoree for the program.

In his 16th season at the helm, McMindes led his squad to the program’s 29th SCAC tournament championship, defeating Southwestern, 4-1, in the title match. With the victory, the Trinity men's tennis program holds the most SCAC Championships of any program in conference history. The No. 27 ranked Tigers (16-10), who received the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by winning the conference title two weekends ago, are making their 15th straight NCAA Division III Tournament appearance and 31st in program history. Trinity open regional competition on Friday in Claremont, Calif., on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.

McMindes has earned at least a share of the Coach-of-the-Year honor in 13 of his prior 15 seasons the award has been presented (no COTY award was made following the 2019-20 season due to COVID).
