Austin College dropped a pair
of games last week, falling 58-49 to Dallas and falling by three in
overtime to Colorado College. Kersti Marusich scored 12 points and
added seven rebounds in both games while freshman Brooke Melton had
career highs of 17 points and 14 rebounds against Dallas. Shayna
Clardy had 13 points, eight assists and six steals against the
Tigers.
Birmingham-Southern split this week, falling to Berry
College on the road, 56-46, Wednesday, but defeating Rhodes on
Saturday, 75-68. Four Panthers scored in double digits against
Rhodes, led by junior Sam Davidson with 15 points. Sophomore
Melanie Short led on the boards with nine rebounds. Davidson also
led the team in scoring against Berry with 13 points, while junior
Ashton Spurgin led with 11 rebounds. BSC is at home again this
weekend, taking on Austin College, Friday, and Colorado College,
Sunday.
Centre won a pair of SCAC road games defeating Sewanee
82-45 Friday night and then winning 59-46 over Oglethorpe Sunday
afternoon. The Colonels shot a season-best 63.8% (37-58) from the
floor against Sewanee, including 70.8% (17-24) in the first half,
while limiting the Tigers to only 29.8% (17-57) shooting. Centre
didn’t shoot as well against Oglethorpe making only 30.4%
(21-69) of its shots, but made 14 of 15 free throws (93.3%)
compared to only 3 of 4 (75.0%) by Oglethorpe. The Colonels, now
9-5 overall and 3-2 in league play, will host Hendrix and Millsaps
this week.
Becky Luetjen poured in 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as
Colorado College erased a
12-point deficit midway through the second half to post a 71-68
overtime victory at Austin College on Saturday. Luetjen’s
final bucket gave CC a 70-68 lead with 24 ticks remaining in
overtime, and then freshman forward Gracie Rennecker blocked a shot
with 10 seconds to go to help seal the victory. Emily
Wattman-Turner, who finished with a career-high 17 points, made the
second of two free throws with four seconds remaining and
Austin’s desperation three-point attempt fell short as time
expired. Kalli Kemling finished with 11 points and posted career
highs with nine rebounds and five assists. Luetjen scored 20 or
more points for the fifth time this season. She also recorded her
fifth double-double of the year and the 15th of her career.
Trailing 53-41 with 11:53 to go, Luetjen drained back-to-back shots
from behind the arc to ignite a 20-2 run that put the Tigers up
61-55 with 4:40 left on the clock. CC improved to 2-0 in overtime
games this season. Colorado College saw its three-game winning
streak come to an end with a 79-58 non-conference loss at the
University of Dallas on Sunday. Still feeling the effects of
Saturday night’s overtime victory, the Tigers ran out of gas
at the end of each of half and the Crusaders proved more than
capable of taking advantage of the situation. CC was within
striking distance at 25-17 after Jenny Knapp drained a three
pointer with 7:31 remaining in the first half, but UD went on an
18-5 run to build a commanding 21-point lead after 20 minutes.
Colorado College cut its deficit to 45-33 when Luetjen knocked down
a short jumper 3:26 into the second half and trailed by the same
margin when Rennecker completed a three-point play with 9:16
remaining in the game. That, however, was as close as CC would get.
Luetjen led the Tigers with 11 points and five rebounds. Kemling
and Wattman-Turner added nine points apiece. Colorado College is
back on the road this weekend when it travels to Rhodes College and
Birmingham-Southern College on Friday and Sunday,
respectively.
#12 DePauw extended its win streak to seven straight with
road wins over Oglethorpe (71-48) and Sewanee (87-31). In the win
over Oglethorpe, freshman Ali Ross hit 6-of-10 three-pointers and
scored a career-high 22 points in 20 minutes. Katie Aldrich
followed with 17 points and Ellie Pearson grabbed 13 rebounds and
five steals. Kathryn Denbow dished out a career-high eight assists.
DePauw held a 22-18 lead with just over seven minutes left in the
first half before scoring 15 straight to push the lead to 19 on the
way to a 37-20 halftime lead. The Stormy Petrels trimmed the lead
to 13 on a couple of occasions in the second half before DePauw put
the game away with a 16-4 stretch. The Tigers pushed their SCAC win
streak to 19 straight dating back to December 2009 with Sunday's
win at Sewanee. The Tigers broke the game open early as they
extended a 5-3 lead to 28-6 with a 23-3 run. DePauw scored the last
six points of the first half to head to the intermission with a
44-19 advantage. Ellie Pearson led four DePauw double-figure
scorers with 12, while Lauren Goff added 11. Katie Mathews and
Maddie Radcliff followed with 10 each with Radcliff's establishing
a career high. Pearson and Katie Aldrich each grabbed eight
rebounds as the Tigers held a 45-21 edge on the boards. The Tigers
shot a season-best 54.8 percent from the field including 64.3
percent in the second half, while Sewanee shot 22 percent for the
contest and just 17.9 percent in the second half. DePauw knocked
down 9-of-15 from beyond the three-point arc in the win. For the
weekend, Ross led the Tigers with 13.5 points per game, while
Pearson averaged a double-double of 10.5 points and 10.5
rebounds.
Hendrix split its two SCAC road games over the weekend
after a win over Southwestern University on Friday and then a loss
to Trinity University on Saturday. Hendrix now stands at 6-7
overall and 3-2 in conference play. Hendrix senior Christina
Byler scored 18 points, while juniors Katy Ashley-Pauley and Anna
Roane chipped in 14 points apiece to lead the Warriors to an 80-75
win over Southwestern. Hendrix was just four rebounds shy of
doubling Southwestern’s rebound total, 52-28. The Warriors
grabbed 19 offensive rebounds and owned a 25-9 advantage in
second-chance points. Hendrix set new team season-high marks in
points (80), 3-pointers (11), field goals (26), rebounds (52) and
3-point percentage (.524, 11-21). Trinity scored 26 points
off Hendrix’s 29 turnovers and senior Danielle Hubenak scored
19 points to lead the Tigers to a 60-48 victory on Saturday.
Neither team led by more than five points in the first 16 minutes
until Trinity went on a 12-2 spree in the final minutes of the
opening half. The Tigers owned a 28-19 advantage at the break.
Hendrix stormed out of the gate in the second half and Byler
drained back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Warriors a 40-34 lead
with 11:55 left in regulation. Trinity answered with a 15-0 run
over the next four minutes and would not relinquish its lead the
rest of the way.
Millsaps split a pair of road games to open the new year
this weekend. They snapped an 18-game losing streak to Trinity on
Friday, winning 66-59, before dropping a heartbreaking 68-70 loss
at Southwestern, missing the sweep by two points. Friday's win over
Trinity was the first win for a Majors team in San Antonio since
the 1995-96 season (the same year the Majors won the SCAC and
advanced to the National Tournament). The Majors held the Tigers
scoreless over the final two minutes to seal teh victory. The game
at Southwestern saw seven lead changes and six ties, but this time
the home team came out on top to spoil the Majors' hopes of a trip
sweep. Millsaps will stay on the road this week as they travel up
to Greencastle to take on DePauw on Friday before heading over to
Centre on Sunday in Danville.
Oglethorpe lost to DePauw (71-48) and Centre (59-46) this
past week. The Tigers, ranked No. 12 in the country, were simply
too much for the Petrels to tame. The Petrels hung around the Tigers
in the early stages and only tailed by 4 points midway through the
first half. The Tigers, however, closed the half on a big spurt to
open up a 37-20 halftime lead from which they would not look back.
Kelley Reeves (11 points) and Katie Weeks (10 points) were the only
Petrels who managed to notch double-figures against a Tiger squad
that outrebounded Oglethorpe 47-35 on the afternoon. Sophomore
Sarah Giles added 6 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocks in the loss.
Against Centre, both squads made 20 field goals in the contest and
shot 30% but the Colonels made 14 free throws compared to only
three for the Petrels in the tough loss. The Petrels hung tough
against a veteran Colonel squad and only tailed by five, 29-24, at
intermission. Oglethorpe was still in striking range late in the
contest but could not get over the hump as Centre closed out the
win. The Colonels controlled the boards with a 52-43 advantage and
made 14 of their 15 free throw attempts to earn the road victory.
Centre was only whistled for 9 fouls throughout the game and
Oglethorpe made 3 of their scant 4 attempts at the charity stripe.
Katie Weeks was the only Petrel in double-figures with 12 points to
go along with 7 rebounds. Senior Chelsea MacDonald netted 9 points
and grabbed 6 boards while sophomore Sarah Giles had a team high 12
rebounds and 6 blocked shots. The Petrels are now 3-10 (2-3) on the
season and will face Southwestern at 6:00 p.m. this Friday in the
Dorough Field House.
Birmingham Southern used a 13-2 run in the final 3:30 of
overtime and rallied to defeat Rhodes 75-68 in a
SCAC game played at Bill Battle Coliseum in Birmingham, AL on
January 8th. Sharwil Bell and LaKeya McGill led the Lynx with 21
points a piece, and it was Bell's jump shot with 3:30 to play in
overtime that gave the Lynx a 66-62 lead. Freshman Amy
Handelman hit two free throws with 21 seconds to play in
regulation to send the game to overtime at 62-62. Handelman
posted her second double double in the past three games with 14
points and 13 rebounds. "Our kids competed at a high level against
one of the best teams in the SCAC, and we came away one possession
short in regulation of winning the basketball game," said Rhodes
Head Coach Matt Dean. Rhodes falls to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the
SCAC. Rhodes will host five of their next seven games and eight of
their final 12.
Sewanee had a tough weekend, going 0-2 after an 82-45 loss
to Centre on Friday and an 87-31 loss to DePauw on Sunday. Dani
Kabbes led the Tigers against the Colonels, grabbing 18 points,
while Claire Elliott added 11 points and three assists. Sewanee
shot just 29% from the field, while the Colonels couldn’t
miss, going 37 of 58 for a 63.8% clip in the contest. 12th-ranked
DePauw University proved too much for the Sewanee Tigers to handle
on Sunday. DePauw dominated the entire contest, forcing host
Sewanee into 24 turnovers and limiting them to just 11 of 50
shooting for the day. Elliott and Kabbes both scored eight points
to lead the Tigers, while Logan Miller added five points and two
assists. The two defeats drop Sewanee to 2-10 on the year and 0-5
in SCAC play. The Tigers will be back in action on Friday when they
play host to Trinity University.
Southwestern split home SCAC games this week to move to
11-3 on the season and 3-2 in the SCAC. A sensational three point
shooting performance by Hendrix did in the Pirates on Friday night
as they narrowly fell 80-75. The Warriors shot 52.4 percent from
three point range in the game and dominated the boards as SU
suffered a -24 rebounding margin in the loss. The Pirate righted
the ship on Sunday afternoon to defeat Millsaps College 70-68. It
was a tight game the entire way with Millsaps having the largest
lead of the contest, 10 points, with 7:42 to play. Southwestern
worked their way back in the game and regained the lead on an Anna
Fareed three pointer with 1:56 to play. Millsaps answered with a
layup but Staley Mullins made two free throws with 27 seconds left
to regain the lead and give the Pirates the win. Southwestern
currently sits in a four way tie for the lead in the West with
Millsaps, Hendrix and Colorado. They head out on the road to face
Oglethorpe on Friday night and Sewanee on Saturday for more SCAC
conference action.
Trinity split a pair of home games in SCAC play,
following a loss to Millsaps with a win over Hendrix on Saturday
night. The win over the Warriors marked the first SCAC win of the
season for the Tigers. Danielle Hubenak and Abby Dietert both
averaged double figures in scoring for the weekend, and while
Dietert led the Tigers in rebounding and steals, Hubenak was the
Trinity leader in assists and field goal percentage. Hubenak is now
eighth in school history with 1,120 career points, needing just
nine more to move up to seventh on the all-time list. She is also
now fourth among all Tiger players in career steals with 176. Up
next for the Tigers will be a pair of road games in SCAC play,
taking on Sewanee and Oglethorpe this weekend. Last season, Trinity
defeated both teams in San Antonio, extending Trinity’s win
streak over Sewanee to 14 consecutive games. The win over
Oglethorpe was the second in the last five games against the
Petrels.
