LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference softball squads opened the conference portion of the schedule last week as Texas Lutheran (6-4, 3-1) and Southwestern (7-3, 1-3) squared off for a four-game series with a doubleheader contested last Friday and Saturday.
The Bulldogs swept the opening twin bill, 4-3, and, 7-1 in big part off the bat of Madisyn Cates with three hits, four RBI and one run scored on Friday night. Kayla Oliveira picked up the win in game two for TLU, pitching a complete game with eight strikeouts.
On Saturday, the Pirates and the Bulldogs split, TLU taking the opening game (12-1) before Southwestern won game two, 6-5, snapping Texas Lutheran’s 52-game SCAC record winning streak. Prior to Saturday’s loss, the last time TLU did not emerge victorious was also against Southwestern back on April 2, 2016. Kelsie Stone earned her third win of the year in game one for TLU and Kelly Jurden led the Bulldogs at the plate with a perfect 4-for-4 performance with three runs scored.
In game two, Sydney Scott shined at the plate for the Pirates with two hits, one run scored, and one RBI as Bailey Meyer improved to 2-1 on the season after tossing a complete game, scattering six hits and striking out five.
In non-conference action last week, Schreiner (4-8, 0-0) split a pair of game with S’western Assemblies by identical scores of 3-1. In the game two win, Ashton Vasquez led the team with two hits and drove in one run, while Kennedy Moody picked up the win and Kaylee Culpepper was credited with the save for the Mountaineers.
Trinity (3-5, 0-0) returned to the diamond for the first time since February 9th, on Tuesday, dropping both contests of a road doubleheader against Concordia. Devon Potter combined for two hits and drove in one run in the series.
The SCAC softball schedule continues this week as Dallas (3-5, 0-0), Austin College (0-11, 0-0), Trinity and Schreiner all open the conference portion of their schedules. Highlights include the Crusaders visiting TLU, the Mountaineers traveling to Southwestern and the TU Tigers going on the road to take on the ‘Roos.
