SUWANEE Ga. - Rhodes closed out the first perfect SCAC Regular season in conference history with a 1-0 win against Hendrix this past weekend. The SCAC Field Hockey Championships gets underway Friday at noon as the #5 seeded Hendrix Warriors square off against the #4 seeded Sewanee Tigers.

Centre finished the regular season with wins
over Sewanee (2-1) and DePauw (1-0) to secure the #3 seed in the
SCAC Championships this weekend in Greencastle, IN. Seniors
Sarah Humphries and Cynthia Morse set a new school record by
winning their 48th match with the Colonels. Sophomore Barbara
Parks led the Colonel attack with a goal and assist while freshmen
Chelsea Klein and Alexis Hebert added goals and sophomore Anna
Fuller and freshman Courtney Kuiper each added assists. The
wins put Centre at 11-4 on the season.
DePauw is 12-6 and finished SCAC play at 5-3 after
splitting two games last week. The Tigers blanked Transylvania,
9-0, for their eighth shutout of the year and lost at Centre, 1-0,
in one overtime. Margaret Ellis scored three goals and Addie
McDonnell added a pair in the win over the Pioneers. Ellis scored
the game's first two goals on assists from McDonnell and Kimberly
Trainor, respectively. McDonnell scored the next two before Ellis
and Chelsea Cutler each added one to give the Tigers a 6-0 halftime
lead. Trainor opened the second-half scoring on Katie Broecker's
assist before Katie Sowar and Courtney Wood rounded out the
scoring. DePauw held a 43-1 advantage in shots and a 15-3 margin in
corners. Centre scored just 2:01 into the first overtime and gave
the Colonels a 1-0 win.DePauw held an 11-8 edge in shots and an
11-10 margin in corners. DePauw's Liz Attewell recorded seven
saves.
Hendrix dropped its final regular season game, 1-0, at
RhodesCollege on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors now stand
at 5-9 overall and 1-7 in SCAC play. Rhodes’ senior
forward Lyndsey Gurkovich scored the game-winning goal in the
eighth minute. She beat the keeper in a one-on-one breakaway
for her seventh goal of the year. Warriors’ senior
goalkeeper Alyssa Havens had a solid day in front of the net and
Rhodes’ senior goalie Sarah Dockery earned her fifth shutout
of the year. The Lynx outshot the Warriors 14-3 and owned an
11-9 advantage in penalty corners.
Rhodes defeated the Hendrix Warriors 1-0 in their
last regular season SCAC game on Saturday at home. Rhodes'
leading scorer, Lindsey Gurkovich, scored the game's lone goal
early in the first half in a 1 on 1 with Hendrix goalkeeper Alyssa
Havens. Sarah Dockery played well in goal for Rhodes notching
8 saves and capturing her fifth shutout of the year. Charlie Wagner
and Marie Mason maintained composure controlling play throughout
the middle. Both teams allowed 12 penalty corners with 23
shots from Rhodes and only 10 from Hendrix. The Lynx (15-1,
8-0 SCAC) will be the #1 seed in next weekend’s SCAC
tournament and will play Saturday at 11 am against the winner of
the Sewanee/Hendrix play in game.
Sewanee split their weekend matches, dropping a 2-1
decision to Centre on Friday and defeating Transylvania 5-0 on
Sunday afternoon. Against Centre, the Tigers got a spark from Elise
Landau, who’s unassisted shot early in the second half tied
things up at one apiece. Unfortunately for Sewanee, the tie
didn’t last for long. Just 1:46 late, Centre’s Alexis
Hebert found the net on a pass from Barbara Parks, breaking the tie
with what proved to be the game-winner. Both squads finished with
eight shots, while Centre led in corners six to four. Anna Morrow
tallied three saves for Sewanee. On Saturday, Sewanee completed the
season sweep of Transylvania, dropping the Pioneers 5-0. The Tigers
got two goals apiece from Landau and senior Caroline Carlin. Taylor
Skeen added the fifth goal for Sewanee, who finished the contest
with 21 shots. The Tigers move to 5-11 overall and Sewanee will
head to DePauw University this weekend for a match up with Hendrix
College in the first round of the SCAC Field Hockey
Championships.
