SUWANEE, Ga. - In a battle of the past two SCAC Championship match-ups and the final two remaining undefeated conference opponents Rhodes defeated DePauw on the road 3-2 in penalty strokes. Rhodes, who has now defeated DePauw three straight contests, got a great performance from goalie Sarah Dockery posting 17 saves including all three of the Tigers penalty strokes that were on frame.
- AROUND THE SCAC -
Centre moved to 7-2 on the season (2-2 SCAC)
with an 11-0 win over neighbor Transylvania University on Saturday,
Oct. 2. The match was the only one for the Colonels this
week. Sophomore Barbara Parks led Centre contributing to five
goals (1 goal, 4 assists). Two Colonels recorded hat-tricks:
Chelsea Klein (3 goals, 1 assist) and Erin Bacon (3 goals).
Also recording points were: Jessica McLean (1 goal, 2 assists),
Sarah Humphries (1 goal), Courtney Kuiper (1 goal), Leah Oberst (1
goal), Jennifer Bohnert (1 assist), Sarah Jessee (1 assist), and
Anna Fuller (1 assist). The Colonels' defense recorded its fifth
shutout of the season with sophomore goal keeper Cece Lindsey
earning her first collegiate shutout by turning away 13 shots.
Lindsey made a number of outstanding saves late in the match
to preserve the clean sheet. Senior Cynthia Morse did not
make the score sheet but played her best match of the season
creating a number of great chances in attack and maintaining
possession for the Colonels in the midfield. Said Head Coach
Tom Hobbs: "It was certainly an offensive explosion today, which is
what we needed going into to two tough road contests next
weekend. Hendrix makes you earn every minute of the match and
Rhodes is undefeated so far in SCAC play. We'll do our best
to build on this momentum."
DePauw is 9-2 overall and 3-1 in SCAC play after
splitting its two conference games last weekend. The Tigers lost to
Rhodes by a 3-2 count on Friday in a game decided by penalty
strokes before blanking Hendrix, 2-0, for the seventh shutout of
the season. DePauw took a 2-0 lead over Rhodes with goals from
Margaret Ellis and Katie Sowar, but the Lynx tied the contest with
a pair of goals in a five-minute stretch in the second half. After
two scoreless overtime periods, Rhodes claimed the win as Charlie
Wagner was the lone player to score in the stroke-off. DePauw
outshot the Lynx, 22-10, and held a 12-8 edge in corners. Liz
Attewell recorded five saves for the Tigers. Ellis scored her 14th
goal of the season in the first half against Hendrix before
Kimberly Trainor added an insurance score just two minutes into the
second half. Depauw held a 17-1 edge in shots and 15-5 margin in
corners. Attewell recorded one save.
Hendrix suffered a pair of conference losses this
week with a 4-2 setback at Sewanee-The University of the South on
Friday evening and a 2-0 defeat at DePauw University on Sunday
afternoon. The Warriors drop to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in league
play, stretching their skid to three games. It was a tale of
two halves on Friday night. Sewanee jumped out to a 3-0 lead
after the first half and Hendrix won the final period 2-1.
The Tigers dominated the first half by outshooting the Warriors,
13-8, and Sewanee took an early 2-0 lead after just 15 minutes of
play on back-to-back goals from senior midfielder Caroline
Carline. Senior forward Taylor Skeen sent the Tigers into
halftime with a 3-0 advantage off an assist from first year
midfielder Mary Kate McAlister in the 21st minute. Sewanee
struck first after the break to reach its final mark on an
unassisted score from sophomore forward Molly Kennedy.
Hendrix outshot Sewanee in the second period, 14-10, and finally
reached the scoreboard on an unassisted goal from sophomore forward
Kelly Rappe in the 49th minute. Junior midfielder Lauren
Thorburg scored her second goal of the season to give Hendrix its
final goal in the 63rd minute. DePauw racked up 17 shots on
the way to its seventh shutout of the year. Hendrix was held
to just one shot in the entire game. DePauw earned a 15-5
advantage in penalty corners. Tigers’ sophomore
midfielder Margaret Ellis scored the opening goal, her 14th of the
year, in the 21st minute off an assist from junior forward Kimberly
Trainor. Trainor went on to score the final goal in the 37th
minute on an unassisted score. Warriors’ senior
goalkeeper Alyssa Havens was just one save shy of her season high
with 12 saves.
Rhodes earned a pair of conference wins with a
3-2 victory in penalty strokes at DePauw and a 3-0 shut out at
Sewanee. With those wins Rhodes finished up their conference
schedule on the road and improved to 9-1 and 4-0 in SCAC play
heading into a month of home games in October. After DePauw
took an early lead the Lynx countered with two goals in the last 12
minutes of play to send the game into overtime. Katie Faucher
scored her third goal of the season and tallied an assist on Libby
Feaster’s game tying goal which came on a right to left cross
from Faucher with just under 7 minutes remaining. Charlie
Wagner and Sarah Ferguson had successful strokes to secure the Lynx
win. Chelsea McLeod scored the Lynx game winning goal at
Sewanee which was supported by second half penalty corner scores by
Libby Feaster and Charlie Wagner. Sarah Dockery had a
phenomenal weekend in goal for the Lynx earning both victories, a
total of 26 saves, and stopping all 3 penalty strokes that DePauw
put on frame. The Lynx will play Transylvania and Centre at
home on Saturday and Sunday, both matches begin at
noon.
Sewanee split it’s two SCAC matches this weekend,
topping Hendrix 4-2 on Friday, and falling 3-0 to Rhodes on Sunday.
In the Hendrix game, senior Caroline Carlin led the Tiger effort,
picking up two goals on six shots in the contest. Sewanee came out
strong in the first half and dominated Hendrix throughout the
match, taking thirteen shots in the first half alone. Carlin got
the Tigers on the board first when she converted a Cameron Herndon
pass into a score at the 31-minute mark. Just twelve minutes later,
she scored again, this time on a penalty stroke, putting the Tigers
up 2-0. Taylor Skeen added a third goal in the first half when she
scored off a pass from Mary Kate McAlister to put Sewanee ahead
3-0. Molly Kennedy added an insurance goal at the 30 minute mark of
the second half, to make it 4-0. Hendrix came up with two late
goals to make the final 4-2. Sewanee held the advantage in shots,
24-22, while Hendrix led 14-7 in corners. On Sunday, the Tigers
played an evenly matched contest with Rhodes, but the Lynx got
three goals past Sewanee keeper Anna Morrow to take the victory,
3-0. Rhodes held the advantage in shots, 16-14, while Sewanee led
in corners, 6-4. Sewanee will travel to Greencastle, Indiana to
face DePauw University on Saturday in SCAC action.
