Colorado
College dropped to 9-9 on the season and 5-4 in SCAC action after suffering road losses to Millsaps College and Rhodes College. In the Tigers’ 59-55 loss to Millsaps on Friday, CC shot a season-high 55.3 percent on the floor and also shot 50.0 percent from long range, but that wasn’t enough as the Tigers gave the Majors extra opportunities due to turnovers. In the final game of the week, Colorado College and Rhodes each hit 18 shots from the floor, which included four from long range, but extra free-throw opportunities for the Lynx was the deciding factor in the 67-60 loss on Sunday. Senior Becky Luetjen led CC averaging 17 points and 14.5 rebounds to earn her eighth and ninth double-doubles of the season against Millsaps and Rhodes. Luetjen also led the team dishing out a team-high eight assists over two games. Senior Jordy Stephenson aided the offense averaging 12 points a game during the week for the Tigers. Colorado College returns home for a pair of conference matchups against Birmingham-Southern College and Oglethorpe University on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Dallas
(5-12, 1-8 SCAC) dropped both games played on the week, a pair of road SCAC contests. Dallas headed to Atlanta for a Friday night battle with Oglethorpe University. After trailing 35-24 at halftime, Dallas was able to make a game of it. Boasting a 46.7 percent (14-of-30) clip from the field in the second half, the Lady Crusaders outscored Oglethorpe, 40-30, in the final half. However, Dallas fell one-point short of catching the Lady Stormy Petrels, whom netted a 65-64 victory. 5-foot-5 freshman guard Marleyna Bustamante netted a game-high 21 points for Dallas on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and a 7-of-8 effort from the charity stripe. The Lady Crusaders then traveled to Birmingham, Ala., for a Saturday night match-up with Birmingham-Southern College. Deadlocked 22-22 at the break, Birmingham-Southern pulled away in the second-half to a final score of 62-55. The Lady Panthers were able to sink 10-of-14 from the free-throw line in the second-half which helped propel them to a 40 point half. 5-foot-4 junior guard Kylie Yoshimura put home a game-high 24 points for Dallas, while 5-foot-10 sophomore post contributed a double-double (11 points, 13 rebounds). On the docket this week for Dallas are two SCAC home games -- Sewanee: University of the South (Friday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m.) and Centre College (Sunday, Jan. 29, at 1 p.m.).

Hendrix suffered a pair of road losses over the weekend. On Friday, Hendrix fell 64-52 to Rhodes. Senior guard Anna Roane led Hendrix with 15 points and freshman guard Lindsay Drillette came off the bench to score a season-best nine points. Sophomore forward Jamie Tate scored 13 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season. In Sunday’s 71-46 loss to Millsaps, Tate grabbed 12 rebounds and broke Mandy Williams’ school record of 237 rebounds in a season set in 1995-96. Tate now has 245 on the year, and is close to breaking the SCAC Top 10. Roane led the Warriors again with 17 points. Sophomore forward Katie Coughran set career-bests with 10 points and six rebounds. Hendrix will return to Conway on Friday to host Oglethorpe, then take on Birmingham-Southern on Sunday.

Millsaps
continues to play at an extremely high level as they picked up two more wins in their return trip home. On Friday, the team struggled from the field shooting and was outrebounded four, but a great defensive effort behind a wild crowd propelled Millsaps to a 59-55 win over the Colorado College Tigers. The win brought the Majors win streak to 12 at the time as they performed in front their home crowd for the first time since December 12th. Junior Shnate Morton led the way with 18 points while 13 of them came in the first half. Freshman Samantha Perez added 12, senior Janice Okeke picked up 11, and freshman Velvet Johnson added 10. Okeke was the leader rebounds picking up nine while Morton added eight. The key was the Majors forcing 27 Tiger turnovers despite being outshot 55% to 38%. The Majors did a great job containing First Team All-SCAC and last week's player of the week, Becky Luetjen to 2-of-8 shooting and 10 points. Millsaps extended their winning streak to 13 on Sunday afternoon as they dominated the Hendrix Warriors from start to finish, 71-46. The Majors remain in striking distance of Centre (9-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) as they are only one game behind in the Eastern Division. With the wins, the Majors improve to 16-2 overall and 8-1 in the SCAC. Morton led the way with her nation leading 12th double-double this season with 20 points and 13 boards. Johnson added 14 points and three steals while freshman Brittnei Earl picked up nine points. Sophomore Shatoya White added five assists. The Major defense was stellar as they held Hendrix to 20% shooting (11-of-55) including 10% in the second half. They also forced 15 turnovers on the day. Millsaps prepares to hit the road again as they face two very good Western Division teams at their place in Southwestern and Trinity. The Majors take on the Pirates on Friday at 6 p.m.

Oglethorpe
won two contests this past weekend, topping Dallas (W, 65-64) and Austin (W, 62-51) on Pinholster Court. Against Dallas, the two sides went back-and-forth for much of the first half until Oglethorpe held a 19-18 lead with under 5 minutes remaining in the period. That's when the Petrels started what would become a 16-6 spurt to close the half and race into the locker room with a 35-24 advantage. The Petrels continued to up the margin back up to six points on four separate occasions, but Dallas used a 9-2 burst to claim their first lead since the first half at 59-58 with 5 minutes to play. The Petrels bounced back to nudge in front and, after Sarah Giles scored a layup with 2:16 left, had forged a 64-61 advantage. The Crusaders responded with a game-tying three-pointer though before a series of turnovers set Dallas up with the ball and 11 seconds to play. That's when Brandon poked it away from Kylie Yoshimura leading to a sprint up court that ended with Weeks being fouled as she attempted a game-clinching lay-up. No matter, however, as Weeks calmly buried the free throw with just 1.3 second left to seal Oglethorpe's first win in their last 10 tries. Against Austin, Oglethorpe used a dominant second half to knock off the Kangaroos in rather easy fashion. The Petrels got the early jump in this one, scoring 10 of the game's first 12 points to race out to an 8 point lead. The Kangaroos steadied themselves, however, and fought back to take a 28-26 lead at halftime. Austin used a 14-0 first half advantage in points off turnovers to spur their rally and take the slim advantage into the locker room. The second half was an entirely different story as the Petrels outscored the 'Roos 8-0 in points off turnovers, 11-0 in second chance points and 16-0 in bench points. A three-ball from Sarah Jones with 12:34 left in the game made the score 36-34 and put the Petrels ahead for good. The score was 40-37 Oglethorpe out front with less than 10 to play when the Lady Petrels exploded for a 14-0 run over the next 6 minutes to put the game away. Christian Langston started the spurt with a jumper and Aisha Atwater followed with back-to back hoops to push the lead to 9. Riley Cerone and Jones hit three-pointers on the next two possessions and Katie Weeks capped the flurry with a layup. When the dust had settled, Oglethorpe owned a 54-37 lead with under 4 minutes to play and the game was already on ice. The 'Roos made three treys in the final 90 seconds to keep the margin from swelling to 20. Jones led all Petrels with 13 points on the afternoon. Sarah Giles and Riley Cerone each tallied 12 as Giles pulled down a team-high (tied with Ky'Laine Rogers) seven boards. Oglethorpe took care of the basketball (18 assists versus only 10 turnovers) and dominated the points in the paint (24-2) to post a stress-free win. Austin attempted 38 three-pointers in the game but made only 13 of those attempts. The Lady Petrels are now 5-13 (2-7) on the season. They hit the road this weekend to face Hendrix on Friday and Colorado College on Sunday.

Rhodes
forced 27 Colorado College turnovers enroute to a 67-60 SCAC home win over the Tigers at Mallory Gymnasium, on Sunday, January 22nd. Sophomore guard Lauren Avant (Memphis, TN) came off the bench to lead the Lynx with a game high 21 points in 22 minutes of play. Avant was 15 of 20 from the foul line and also grabbed 4 rebounds. Junior guard Sarah Womack (Germantown, TN) connected on 3 of 8 thee point field goals, scoring 13 points and grabbing 5 rebounds. Senior forward Sharwil Bell (Memphis, TN) added 11 points as the Lynx won their fourth consecutive game. Freshman guard Natalie Goodrum (Nashville, TN) added 5 points and pulled down 3 rebounds as Rhodes improved to 12-5 on the season and 6-3 in SCAC play. The Lynx will travel to San Antonio, TX to face Trinity University next Friday, Janaury 27th.

The Tigers struggles continued this week. Sewanee dropped a pair of SCAC games against Trinity and Southwestern. The Tigers’ undoing came at the expense of turnovers. In both games, the Tigers averaged 24 turnovers while only shooting 39 percent from the floor. This week, the Tigers will look to turn things around at Dallas and Austin.

Southwestern
captured first place in the SCAC West this week, splitting games on the road at Centre and Sewanee. Friday night the Pirates squared off with conference unbeaten, Centre. The Colonels needed a lights out night offensively and got just that as they shot 51.7% from the floor and 61.5% from three point range to hand Southwestern the 79-55 loss. Saturday SU rebounded in a big way, rattling off a 20-8 run to open the game and holding Sewanee to just 20 first half points. Anna Fareed was on fire from three point range, going 5-9 from long distance. Southwestern dominated the boards in the game with 49 rebounds and committed just 14 turnovers while forcing 23. With the split the Pirates move to 9-8 on the year and 6-2 in conference action. They return home to face East second and third place Millsaps and Rhodes.

Trinity
split a pair of SCAC games over the weekend, beating Sewanee 87-74 for the team’s third straight victory, then falling to Centre 84-67 on Saturday night. The Tigers had won two of its three previous games heading into the weekend, with the only defeat coming in a two-point game against UT-Tyler. The loss to Centre on Saturday also snapped Trinity’s five-game SCAC winning streak – a streak that has vaulted the Tigers into second place in the SCAC West Division. Trinity is set to host Rhodes on Friday evening, followed by a Sunday afternoon game against Millsaps. The Tigers lost 66-59 at home against Millsaps last season, but did earn a 77-66 road win over Rhodes in 2010-11. Trinity also defeated Rhodes 85-51 in the 2011 SCAC tournament.
