KARISA
CANTU OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a senior
guard from San Antonio, Texas, has been selected the SCAC
Women’s Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played
through Sunday, February 1st.
Cantu led Texas Lutheran this past weekend to
a pair of wins, defeating Austin College and the University of
Dallas at home to run their winning streak to three games while
averaging 90.5 points in the two games.
Cantu averaged 20.5 pts/gm on the weekend, shooting 10-for-20 from the field, 4-of-8 from behind the arch, and 17-for-20 from the charity striple. She added 5.0 ast/gm, 1.5 stl/gm, and 1.0 blk/gm on the weekend.
Cantu began the weekend with a 16 points, seven assist game in an 89-77 win over the 'Roos. She was huge from the free throw line, sinking 9-of-10 at the charity stripe. Cantu followed that up with a 25 point night on 7-of-11 shooting including three 3-pointers in a 92-75 win over Dallas. She scored 19 of her 25 points in the second half to lead the Bulldogs to a 50-point second half.
For the season, Cantu is second on the team with 12.5 pts/gm (9th in SCAC) and third in the SCAC with 89 assists on the season. She is also third in the conference in steals with 45 and assist/turnover ratio at 1.8.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior guard Christina
Kime of Austin College averaged 9.5 points, 6.0
assists, and 3.0 rebounds in a pair games over the weekend, putting
together a strong all-around performance for the ‘Roos. Junior forward Briana Edwards
of Centenary averaged 14.5 points per game for the
weekend including a team-best 21 points and 20 rebounds against
Schreiner. Junior forward
Danielle Davis of Colorado College averaged 12 points
and 8.5 rebounds, and shot .571 from the floor last week. With
seven rebounds against Trinity on Saturday night, she became the
25th Tiger to record 400 or more in her career. Senior guard Marleyna Bustamante of
Dallas posted another solid week averaging 20 points a
contest. She tied her second-highest scoring output, 19 points, in
a setback at Southwestern. That night was notable for the senior
guard as she became the 11th player in school history to break
1,000 career points. Junior forward Brooke Sanders of
Schreiner led the Mountaineers to a 2-0 week with
18.5 ppg and eight rebounds. Against Centenary she scored 24 points
with 6 rebounds. Senior
forward Annie Bourne of Southwestern averaged a
double-double this week with 14 boards and 11 points per game and
shot 53.3% from the floor and 75% from the free throw line while
adding in six assists, three steals and two blocks. Sophomore guard Allison Staley of
Trinity came off the bench to score in double
figures in both games, averaging 13.0 points/game over the weekend.
She hit 60% (9-15) from the field overall, as well as 61.5% (8-13)
from three-point range in the two wins.
