ROCKWALL, Texas - Colorado College sophomore Austin Howlett easily outdistanced himself from the field in winning the 2013 SCAC Men's Diving 1-meter championship during day one of the SCAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship at the Rockwall ISD Aquatics Center. Howlett, the 2012 SCAC Diver of the Year, took a big step toward repeating as the Makawao, Hawaii native won the 1-meter competition by 120.05 points over Trinity University's Stu Sproul (360.90). Howlett's score of 480.95 earned himself NCAA qualifying mark.
Howlett's win tonight was the sophomore's second individual SCAC championship. Last year he earned the 3-meter individual championship.
Teammate Reggie Anderson finished in third with a score of 319.10 while Colorado College's Daniel Condren placed sixth with a score of 255.35.
While Howlett won the individiual competition, Trinity divers took second, fifth, and seventh. The Trinity Tigers hold a slim five points lead (54-49) over second place Colorado College.
Trinity's Sproul saw teammates Galve Deleste (273.90) and Philip Whalen (236.10) finish in the top-10. Calvin New also tallied a top-10 finish for the Trinity Tigers as he scored an eighth place finish with 225.85 points.
Austin College's Zack Bengston finished in fourth with a score of 306.75. Rounding out the finishers was Southwestern University's Joe Quintero (9th - 208.70) and teammate Sam Visser (10th - 160.20).
The first full day of swimming and diving competition begins tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. CST with preliminary action followed by the first full day of finals competition at 6:30 p.m.
