NORMAN, Okla. - Junior Jordan Cowart of
Southwestern University led four SCAC golfers as he earned second
team All-America on the PING Division III All-America team
that was announced by the Golf Coaches Association of
America. Joining Cowart are three golfers from the
NCAA Champion Schreiner. Juniors Cheyne Kendall and Jimmy Keener
and freshman Matt McClung all earned Honorable Mention honors.
Cowart had an average score of 73.91 this season, 1.91 vs. par and
1.88 adjusted. In nine tournaments he finished in the top five five
times including a second place finish in the SCAC Championships to
earn First Team All-SCAC honors.
Cowart and his Pirate teammates earned an at-large bids to the NCAA
Championship. Cowart carded a +2 for a total 290 at the
championships to finish third in his second trip to the NCAA
Championship. His third place finish also helped the Southwestern
men's golf team to its highest ever finish at the NCAA Championship
with an 11th place finish.
Kendall was the highest ranked Schreiner player this past year. He
finished the year ranked No. 15 in the nation individually, won a
tournament (Schreiner Spring Shootout), broke the school scoring
record (74.27), finished runner-up at the SCAC Championship
Tournament and did the same at the NCAA Championship. He finished
the year posting five straight top-three finishes individually and
was named First Team All-SCAC.
Keener bookended his year with very strong performances. He started
the year by winning the John Bohmann Memorial and finished the year
placing third overall at the NCAA Championship Tournament. He
ended up ranked as the 20th best player in all of D-III golf. He
had an overall stroke average of 75.48.
McClung had an impressive rookie campaign. He became the third
Mountaineer men's golfer to win a tournament as a freshman
(JDG/UT-Dallas Spring Classic), was named to the D-III All-Freshman
Team, earned honorable mention All-SCAC and carried a 75.36 scoring
average.
The three Mountaineers, along with junior Zach Oliver and sophomore
Phil Stewart, won the SCAC title in record-breaking fashion in
April in the school's first year as a member. The
Mountaineers received its first at-large bid to last month's NCAA
Championship and proceeded to go wire-to-wire to win the title by
five strokes over Oglethorpe University.
