LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- After a week of weather-related postponements and cancellations, SCAC baseball was back on the diamond this week with 16 games put in the scorebook.
No. 4/21 Trinity (5-0) posted a 5-0 week, which included victories over Howard Payne on Tuesday followed by four victories over Southwestern. In Friday’s 3-1 victory over the Pirates, Garrett Aylor led the way for the Tigers, tossing five scoreless innings, striking out 11 while allowing just two hits. Saturday’s double header produced a pair of victories - 16-6 and 9-3. In game one, Michael Herrera tied a school record, drawing four walks, while also scoring three runs. James Nittoli started game two, striking out four batters and scattering four hits over five innings. Matthew Thomas came on in relief, striking out eight batters without allowing a hit in three scoreless innings. In Sunday’s 19-3 victory, the Tigers were led by Tyler Pettit’s five RBI and three runs scored. Pettit went 3-for-4 at the plate, including his first home run of the season. In his season debut, Nathan Braulick went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI.
Southwestern’s (0-4) Preston Witt paced the Pirates at the plate, with a double and four runs driven in over the four-game set.
St. Thomas (5-0) produced a pair of double-header victories over Arlington Baptist on both Friday and Saturday. In a 3-0 victory on Friday, Kyle Bearden scored two runs, with John Sebok adding one. The Celts finished game two with an 11-2 win, led by Brandon Herrera’s four RBI and two runs scored. Saturday’s double-header saw a 17-4 victory in game one followed by a 6-5 win in game two. Leo Galvan led the Celts on Saturday, finishing with four RBI and two runs in game one, with two RBI and one run scored in game two.
Centenary (6-2) went 2-1 over the weekend against Huntingdon (Ala.). The Gents swept the Hawks on Saturday, with a 4-0 victory in game one, followed by a 10-6 decision in game two. Senior first baseman Preston Ludwick led the Gents, going 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Senior Cody Crowder went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, a home run and a double, three runs scored, and a walk. The Gents picked up their first shutout win of the season in game two, led by the versatile Ludwick, who took his turn on the mound and pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits and one walk.
No. 12/24 Texas Lutheran (2-1) opened its season by taking two of three from Schreiner, which included wins on Saturday (10-1) and Sunday (17-7). In Saturday night’s victory, Matthew Hickey tossed six innings of three-hit baseball, and Tyler Cauley had two hits, including a two-run home run. The Bulldogs split Sunday’s double-header as designated hitter Tyler Post belted a pair of home runs. Cole Irby went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.
The weekend set were also the first games for Schreiner (1-2), who picked up its victory in Sunday’s first game, a 7-3 decision over Texas Lutheran. The Mountaineers were led by Garrett Whitley in game one as the senior left-hander worked 6.2 innings and scattered nine hits and allowed three earned runs.
The third full week of SCAC baseball continues this week with 12 games on the schedule, including a non-conference three-game set between Southwestern and Texas Lutheran.
