TIMOTHY "BUCK"
MCKENNA OF COLORADO
COLLEGE, a senior midfielder on the
men's lacrosse team from Wenham, Mass., has been selected the
SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for
the week ending April 10, 2011.
McKenna, who leads the Tigers in ground balls and
faceoffs, has helped Colorado College record the best
start in program history at 9-0. He was named SCAC Defensive
Player of the Week for the first time in his career on April 4, but
his accomplishments off the field are even more impressive.
It’s no surprise McKenna was voted one of
the team’s captains for the 2011 season, considering he has
been a leader among CC’s student-athletes, on campus and in
the Colorado Springs community throughout his four years in
Colorado Springs.
McKenna, a religion major with a minor in
education, began his campus involvement as a New Student
Orientation leader, helping incoming students make the adjustment
from living at home to being at Colorado College. He and former
teammate Mike Lynch led a trip to Alamosa, Colo., where they worked
in a local food bank and homeless shelter. They also talked with a
group of young students at a local school.
McKenna has a passion for working with kids. While
studying abroad in Melbourne, Australia, during the Fall semester
of 2009, he worked at a local YMCA. In 2010, he served as a mentor
for Volunteer Action, which matches CC role models with 4th and 5th
grade students from Washington and Edison Elementary Schools to
participate in fun, planned activities both on and off campus.
McKenna also teaches lacrosse skills to aspiring
players as an instructor at the Colorado College Men's Lacrosse
Summer Camp.
McKenna's involvement in community service goes
beyond the campus walls. In each of the last four years, he was the
team captain and participant in the St. Baldrick’s
Foundation’s annual event at Colorado College, where he and
the Tigers shaved their heads to help raise awareness for childhood
cancer research in what has become one of the team's annual
traditions.
In addition to his role as co-chair of CC's Student-Athlete
Advisory Committee, McKenna served as a
recruitment leader for Colorado College's Relay for Life, which
will be held April 29-30 at Washburn Field. So far, 32 teams have
signed up to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer,
remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease. The
committee's goal is to raise at least $32,000.00.
Finally, McKenna is the organizer for the 2011
Quony Cup soccer tournament, an all-campus event held in honor of
former Colorado College soccer and lacrosse player Chris Quon, who
died suddenly from a heart condition on Sept. 19, 2009, just four
months after graduating with a degree in economics. Proceeds from
the tournament are split between the American Cancer Society and
the Christopher Quon Memorial Fund.
After graduating in May, McKenna will relocate to
San Francisco where he will work at Town School for Boys.
