SCOTT SHELTON OF BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN COLLEGE, a senior defender from Birmingham, Ala., who is a defender and captain on the men's soccer team, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending September 27, 2009.
Shelton, who scored the game-winning goal on a
penalty kick against Rhodes College this past Friday, has
served as coordinator of the Bunting Center's Piper Place Project
for the past two and a half years. Piper Place is a local mental
health day program for those suffering from serious mental
disorders. Shelton has helped to raise awareness
in the community about the project and its need for student
volunteers.
This past summer, Shelton worked as a Hess Fellow
for Birmingham-Southern College. He and twelve other students were
placed in internships at various advocacy agencies.
Shelton worked at Collaborative Solutions, Inc.,
helping to raise awareness about the need for supportive housing
programs for Alabama citizens most in need, including those with
HIV/AIDS and serious mental disorders.
