Jamie Burns, Schreiner University, Volleyball

JAMIE BURNS OF SCHREINER UNIVERSITY, a senior libero on the women's volleyball team, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending September 29, 2013.

Burns has been a key contributor to the team for her entire college career. This fall, she again leads the team in digs and is one of the captains for the Mountaineers.

Her contributions to the team, campus and community are significant. The LaVernia, Texas native has accumulated 798 digs during her first three years and is averaging 4.34 digs per set so far this fall. She was named All-Conference (ASC) – Third Team last fall. 

She is a Biology major carrying a 3.87 GPA and earned academic all-conference (ASC) in both years she was eligible. Burns has been on the President’s List five of her six semesters at Schreiner, and has served as the volleyball team’s representative to the Student-Athlete Advisor Committee the past three years.

In the community, Burns has been a consistent helper with the San Antonio Area Food Bank, has participated in toy drives, has worked with young girls from the YMCA, and (as a member of the Schreiner SAAC) helped raise money for the YMCA Make A Change effort that Schreiner has won for each of the past three years. She has also mentored a young girl in the community of Kerrville. This past summer, Burns gained experience volunteering at the Outpatient Physical Therapy Department at the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center in Seguin.

In her home community of LaVernia, Burns has served as a volunteer coach for summer league volleyball, and has given lessons in both volleyball and horseback riding.

Burns will graduate in May of 2014 and intends to go to physical therapy school.
