Monica Holguin, Trinity University, Player of the Year

In exclusive voting by the head coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), senior guard MONICA HOLGUIN OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY was selected as SCAC Women’s Basketball Player-of-the-Year for the second consecutive year.

A preseason All-America selection, Holguin finished the regular season ranked in the top 10 in the conference for points, assists and steals per game for the second consecutive year. One of just two players to accomplish the feat this season, she enters the SCAC Tournament averaging a team-high 15.7 points per game (second in the SCAC) while also adding 2.6 assists (fifth in the SCAC) and 1.9 steals (seventh in the SCAC) a contest. Among her highlights this season for the eighth-ranked Tigers, Holguin poured in a career-high 31 points in the Feb. 16 victory over Schreiner that locked up a share of the SCAC regular season title. It marked the first time a Trinity player had scored 30 or more in a game since 2014. Holguin becomes just the sixth player in league history to earn back-to-back SCAC Women’s Basketball Player-of-the-Year honors and the first since Centre College’s Maggie Prewitt won the award in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

Holguin received six votes from the coaches in the Player-of-the-Year, while sophomore forward Bryce Frank of Austin College and senior forward Kristen Lye of Texas Lutheran received one vote each.
