ZACH MAGERS OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a junior on the men's swimming and diving team from Sherman, Texas, has been selected as the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning January 13.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Magers has always enjoyed a close bond with the Sherman community. Not only is the junior on the ‘Roo men’s swimming team a native of the city, but his father both played on the college’s 1981 NAIA National Championship football team and served as the town’s mayor. It’s no surprise, then, that he’s been active in giving back through volunteer work and community service throughout his life.

Magers, who also serves on the athletic department’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, has been an active volunteer with Downtown Sherman NOW, a non-profit effort to revitalize and promote the city’s downtown area. Magers has worked as a volunteer with the project in the past, helping with both set up and tear down of equipment and booths.

In addition to his work promoting his hometown, Magers has also been active in helping to raise funds for testicular cancer research. Magers helped to organize a spikeball tournament with all proceeds being donated to that cause.

On top of those efforts, he’s also worked to raise money for the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation by holding a Home Run Derby to generate proceeds for veterans in need of therapy. Magers has also been active with Meals on Wheels throughout his life, working with his father to deliver food to the elderly in the Sherman area to help combat hunger.
