LEANNE GILDER
OF MILLSAPS
COLLEGE, a sophomore outside
hitter on the women's volleyball team who hails from
Lafayette, La., has been selected the SCAC Character &
Community Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending
October 16, 2011.
Gilder is in Wellspring and has volunteered
at two food shelters around the Jackson community for the homeless:
Stewpot and Grace Place Church.
This past fall, she attended a locked-down place for kids with
autism and served a Thanksgiving dinner to those children who were
unable to go home for the holiday.
On the Millsaps campus, Gilder has
volunteered for the Chi Omega Sorority Make A Wish fundraiser 5K
run. That venture raised around $10,000 for a girl with cancer who
had a dream to go to Hawaii; with the money raised, her wish was
granted.
She has also volunteered and helped with the Block Party - an
on-campus activity where Gilder helped run the
volleyball and badminton area and was able to interact and play
games with the neighborhood children.
Gilder, who also attends a weekly bible study
sponsored by Chi Omega, participated in the Millsaps Challenge
program the summer before she arrived at Millsaps and went to
various locations around Jackson serving others in the
community.
