Trinity Claims Third Straight SCAC Men's Soccer Title in Thrilling Fashion

SEGUIN, Texas - The top-seeded Trinity men's soccer team scored two late goals to win the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship in a 2-1 comeback victory over No. 2 seed Colorado College on Sunday afternoon. Box Score | Interactive Bracket | Official Website Photo Gallery

In, what was, the game of the year in SCAC men's soccer, Colorado College was within seven minutes of claiming their first SCAC title. In the 83rd minute; however, Colorado College was called for a foul in the box, and Johnny Lawson converted the penalty kick to even the game at one. It was the SCAC-leading 17th goal of the season for Lawson.

The game-winner came just four minutes later as Zacharias Edholm and Derrick Horvath connected with Goncalo Santana for the score. The goal came with just 3:43 remaining, finishing off an amazing comeback for Trinity and send the Tiges of Colorado College home with a crushing defeat.

Earlier in the match, Max Grossenbacher put Colorado College up 1-0 in the 29th minute of play, a score that held until Trinity began its comeback. It was the first time Trinity had trailed at the half of a SCAC Championship Game.

Lawson earned SCAC Offensive MVP honors for his performance over the weekend while Tom Carwile took home Defensive MVP honors for the Tigers.

Matt Cardone guarded the Trinity net for the full 90 minutes, recording three total saves. Meanwhile, Theo Hooker of Colorado College picked up five saves in the contest.

Trinity outshot Colorado College, 15-12, with three shots each coming from Roberto Camargo, Victor Araujo, and Lawson. Brandon Ogilvie paced the offense of Colorado College with five shots while Grossenbacher added four.

The Tigers captured their third straight conference title and the 17th overall for the program. The win for the Tigers secures the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It will be the 13th consecutive foray into the NCAA Tournament, all coming under head coach Paul McGinlay.

Trinity will find out its destination on Monday with the announcement of the field.
