GEORGETOWN, Texas
– The No. 1-ranked Colorado College volleyball team saw its dream season come to an early conclusion on Sunday afternoon against a veteran Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges team in the regional championship match at Southwestern University.

In a contest that deserved to be played at next week's national championship in Grand Rapids, Mich., the Athens rebounded from dropping the first set to record a 21-25, 25-17, 25-17, 26-24 victory in the regional final.

CMS avenged last year's NCAA tournament loss to the Tigers in Dallas and leveled the postseason series between the West Region rivals at 2-2.

Sophomore outside hitter Jordan Mullen led the Tigers with 20 kills, her 17th match of the season with double-digit kills and her fifth with 20 or more.

In a sign of things to come, Allie Freeburg was virtually unstoppable for the second day in a row. CC's freshman outside hitter put down a season-high 13 kills while leading the team with a .417 hitting percentage.

Sophomore libero Anna Gurolnick led the Tigers with a season-high 28 digs, her seventh of the year with 20 or more.

Lizzy Counts, who earned a spot on the all-tournament team, dished out 48 assists and finished the year with 1,223, which ranks third on the program's single-season chart. She also climbed into fifth place on the program's career assist list with 2,120.

Senior right side hitter Margaux Arntson, who was named MVP of the regional, had 16 kills for the Athenas, hitting .500 with just two errors on 25 attacks.

Freshman middle hitter Melanie Moore, herself an all-tournament selection, finished with 15 kills for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, which improved to 28-5.

Colorado College finished its remarkable season with a 33-2 record.
