(From Sewanee's Website)
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- It was a cool, wet
night in Lynchburg and the host Hornets stopped Sewanee’s
recent win streak at eight with a 4-0 shutout of the visiting
Tigers. 2008 marks the first SCAC championship in field hockey for
Sewanee and also the first NCAA Championships appearance in the
program’s 33-year history. Box Score
Sewanee played a defensive first 15 minutes before Lynchburg broke
the scoring drought with a pair of quick goals - both off of
penalty corners – to go up 2-0 on the Tigers. Signey Milks
added one more first half goal for Lynchburg on a penalty shot to
give the Hornets the 3-0 edge that they would carry into halftime.
In the second half, Lynchburg added one more goal for insurance to
finalize the 4-0 tally.
Lynchburg outshot Sewanee 18-3 and took 11 corners compared to
four for Sewanee. Sewanee senior goalkeeper Clarkie Crawford
(Louisville, Ky., Collegiate) had five saves on the day. Sarah
Cates earned the shutout in goal for Lynchburg, which is 18-5 and
will continue NCAA postseason play at Ursinus College in
Pennsylvania this weekend.
Sewanee finishes the season at 14-7 under the first year
leadership of coach Jen Baldaccini. The Tigers won their first ever
SCAC Championship and won 14 games for the first time in a decade
– only the third time in the program’s history.
