Nick Caputo, Southwestern University, Men's Basketball

NICK CAPUTO OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a senior on the men's basketball team from Austin, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending January 16, 2011.

Caputo has been a mentor at Annie Purl Elementary for three years. This activity involves going to the local elementary school and doing homework, eating lunch, playing games, or other things of that nature with his 7-year old mentee.

Caputo has also held a SIRA supervisor position for two years where he oversees the intramural process on campus and makes sure that all sports are ready to be played. He ensures that everything is set up, officials are scheduled, and the proper advertisements have been done.

While in college, Caputo has been a supervisor at a leadership conference in Lake Tahoe for several weeks each summer. While there, he was assigned to a group of High School Student Council members for five days and did all sorts of leadership training and goal setting activities.

Last year, Caputo was the recruitment chair for his Fraternity, Phi Delta Theta. In this capacity, he helped to set up events and functions that were attractive to college males. Under his leadership as recruitment chair, the fraternity recruited the most fall pledges in school history, 10. This past year, he has been the President of the Fraternity which involves talking to the National Headquarters on a regular basis, and, as the voice and face of the Fraternity on campus, leading a 40+ person group of individuals to try to achieve common goals. While President, Phi Delta Theta has put on a wiffle ball tournament fundraiser for the Georgetown Police Department, participated in the ALS walk, and conducted a fundraiser to collect clothes for The Caring Place.

During Christmas time, Caputo participated in an event at this church where individuals pick names off of a tree and deliver presents and food to the families in need.
